Theatres

With a simple click get a list of all the theatres in Prague. Sorted according to category

The National Theatre    The National Theatre    The National Theatre
The upsurge of Czech nationalism in the 19th century was due, in no small part, to a highly influential literary, music and arts scene, with composers such as Bedrich Smetana being instrumental in creating new cultural institutions such as Josef Zitek's National Theatre. Standing as fitting testament to the wave of patriotism that united all levels of Bohemian society, it was founded after a group of influential Czech nationalists had successfully petitioned Emperor Ferdinand V for permission to build a dedicated Czech language theatre. Funded entirely from public donations, work began in 1868, with Zitek overseeing the final touches to his grand structure in 1881.

Theatre of Estates    Theatre of Estates
This venue most often presents Mozart operas but other composers' works can also be experienced here. The theatre is one of the most beautiful historical theatres in Europe. Part of its charm, magic and value lies in its historical signifiance, from the musical career of Mozart to modern times. For the filming of "Amadeus," director Milos Forman requested use of the theatre as a set. But since he was not in good standing with the government, having defected in the 60s, he was denied any access to the space. Finally it was agreed that he could film in the theatre, if a portion of the film's profits would go towards restoration of the building. This is why it was one of the most splendid sights in Prague, even during the Communist era. In 1786, Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" was performed here, and in 1787 Mozart conducted the premier of "Don Giovanni". Also La Clemenza di Tito had its premiere in Estates Theatre.

State Opera Prague
The stunning Prague State Opera mainly presents performances from the Italian repertoire: Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi and Puccini, with occasional excursions into German and French opera. At festive times, Prague State Opera is also the grand setting for classical concerts. Originally called the German Theatre, Prague State Opera opened in 1887. Until World War II, the theatre was regarded as one of the finest German opera houses outside Germany. Immediately after the war it changed its name to the Smetana Theatre, before finally becoming the Prague State Opera.

Laterna Magika
Laterna Magika is a uniquely Czech theatre experience, a dazzling mix of film, visual effects and ballet. Because the story unfolds visually, there are no language barriers to Laterna Magika; all performances are enjoyed by both tourists and prague locals alike. The repetoire frequently changes and because this is essentially an evolving art form, each new production brings with it new ideas and themes.

National Black Light Theatre
The National Black-Light Theatre Prague has a very specific and unique stage show. The performances of the actors are combined with large-scale projections, black-theatre animation, computer tricks, and light effects. The unique patented stage mechanisms, concealed from the audience in a black cabinet, allow the actors to break through the barriers of time, space and gravity. Really, nothing is impossible. People fly, chess pieces dance, giant puppets stroll over the heads of the audience, whales swallow an entire symphony orchestra.

Marionette Theatre
Mozart composed "The Opera of Operas" - Don Giovanni - especially for Prague and he personally conducted its world first performance in 1787 at the Prague Estates Theatre (Stavovské Theatre). National Marionette Theatre presents this brilliant opera in the unique version using the classical marionettes. Tall marionettes as well as the stylish period costumes and original stage effects can be seen in the performance. It is presented in the original Italian librette and lasts about two hours.

Black light Theatre ANIMATO    Black light Theatre ANIMATO
The theatre ANIMATO came into existence in 1993. The constituent members were two theatre keener Jan Pajer and Petr Vajnera. Thanks to artist Jan Pajer (*1960), who was also the creator of ACT theater in 1989, ANIMATO received a special individual style. In every performance you can see his rather specific and dreamy life perception. A lot of the scenes and sets were inspired directly with his paintings. The special atmosphere of this art project is underlined by the black theatre principle, which is a necessary and natural tool for reaching the artist vision. Jan Pajer itself says: “You can see unseen with help of darkness and UV light.”

Theatre Archa    Theatre Archa
In the half-decade since it opened with Japanese dancer Min Tanaka, Archa has presented compelling dance and musical performances of all genres to a discriminating audience. To mention the names of just a few who have appeared here: John Cale, David Byrne, Meredith Monk, The Residents and Robert Wilson as well as the best of Czech progressive art from the Agon Orchestra to the HaDivadlo and Goose On A String theatre troupes. The hall's modest size means that no one is more than a few rows away from the action and also ensures a sell-out crowd at almost every performance.

Theatre Kalich    Theatre Kalich
The pop musical was the theatrical phenomenon of the nineties in Prague and the trend is still going strong. In 1999, two new theatres designed especially for musicals opened. This one occupies a former evangelical church and its only show is 'Hamlet', with songs and dialogue by a local teen idol, Janek Ledecky, who also takes the title role. He is assisted by a throng of pop stars and big-name actors, so you can be assured that the performance is nothing short of professional.

Theatre Ponec
A venue for contemporary dance and movement theatre, with a programme well worth monitoring! Homepage in Czech and English.

Theatre Fantastika
Prague's other major venue for black-light theatre, Ta Fantastika is a well-run and highly accomplished outfit staging adaptations of famous children's stories such as Alice in Wonderland and Gulliver's Travels. Ticket prices are reasonably high (principally because of the downtown location), although shows are well-worth seeing.
